Laptop Computer Internet Connections

Some people may wish to bring their own laptops to the Symposium and communicate over the internet via them. For the first time, this year we will attempt to arrange two areas where they can be "plugged in." Connections should be available in each dorm room and in the conference room site in Smith Lab where the Physics Department computers are located. For using such connections, please note:

a) A laptop computer with an ethernet card, which will connect to the LAN in OSU Physics or the Dorm ResNet must use DHCP to obtain an IP address. Detailed information for configuring your computer for the dorm network can be obtained here (http://www.resnet.ohio-state.edu). For your laptop to work after leaving Ohio State, it may be necessary to "release" the IP address you obtained here and "renew" your IP address at your home location.

b) A laptop running any version of Windows must also run a recently updated version of antivirus software when connected to the Physics LAN.

c) We strongly suggest that, whenever possible, visitors use SSH for connections to network hosts both inside and outside of Ohio State.

d) The Physics computer staff will be able to help visitors with any of the above, as well as other computer-related problems. Please address any questions to J. D. Wear (jdw@mps.ohio-state.edu)
