Graduate Fellowships

Graduate Teaching Associateships (TA's) are held in either the Physics or Chemistry Departments and receive salaries of at least $20,000 for a 12-month appointment. In addition, fees and tuition (totaling over $24,000 per year for non-residents) are paid for students holding Graduate Associate appointments. This does not include health insurance or the COTA fee. The TA's duties involve about 8 contact hours per week plus class preparation and grading during three of the four academic quarters. A variety of University Fellowships are also available for highly qualified applicants, on a competitive basis, and permit them to devote their full energies to graduate work throughout their first year. The stipends for these are presently on a par with TA positions. Students are not usually admitted to the program without financial support of some kind being given.

NOTE to international (non-English speaking) students: If you are required to show English proficiency through the SPEAK test (click here to download a sample) upon arrival at OSU, then your appointment will be at a lower stipend level ($1,000 per month) until you are certified to teach. This will be explained in your offer letter.

NOTE: To be considered for a Graduate Fellowship, the following items must be received by November 30 for international applicants and by January 15 for domestic applicants:

OSU Admissions should receive:

  • transcripts of all undergraduate courses and any graduate courses taken
  • fully completed online application form
  • GRE scores
  • TOEFL scores (if required)

The Chemical Physics office should receive:

  • a copy of your transcripts of all undergraduate courses and any graduate courses taken
  • a copy of your fully completed application form
  • curriculum vitae/resume
  • a copy of your GRE scores
  • a copy of your TOEFL scores (if required)
  • statement of intent
  • three (3) letters of reference must be submitted on official academic or business letterhead

The items for the Chemical Physics office can be put in one envelope inside the envelope for OSU Admissions. Just address it to Chemical Physics Program, 18 Celeste Lab.

NOTE: The Chemical Physics Program admits students for Autumn quarters only. Exceptions to this will be made on a case by case basis.
